classroom policies
Our students will be expected to follow our 5th grade essential agreement:
Work Hard. Be Nice.
Positive Behavior
As a school, we are always on the lookout for positive behaviors from our students. Staff and students will be looking for others who are being Cooperative, Committed, and Curious (The 3 C’s). When students are “caught” demonstrating one of these “C’s”, they will be given a slip recognizing that behavior. They will earn an academic reward and then be eligible to win a larger reward in our monthly drawing.
Consequences (reset each day)
Warning (Name goes on the board - No note in planner)
Strike 1: Time Out (Note in planner)
Strike 2: Parent Contact (Note in planner)
Strike 3. Office Referral (Note in planner)
Attendance
It is incredibly important that your student is at school. There is no way to make up an absent day of school. I can give make-up work, but that does not come close to replacing the learning experiences during the school day. I understand that absences occur due to illness and emergencies. Please try to limit absences and tardies as much as possible. Thank you for your support.
5th Grade Homework Policy
Homework is an important part of your student’s learning experience.
This is what you can expect for homework. We do reserve the right to change homework during the year as needed.
Planners
Planners are our daily communication tool with parents.
Please sign your child's planner each night.
Homework Packets
Homework Packets will be given on Fridays.
They will be due the following Friday.
Projects
Students will have projects due roughly every three weeks.
Half of these projects will be book reports and half will be related to our Units of Inquiry.
Reading
Students are expected to read at least 30 minutes, at least 5 nights a week.
Parents, please sign planners nightly to indicate that reading has been completed.
Students are expected to meet their AR Reading Goal each trimester.
You can monitor your student's progress toward their goal at: AR Home Connect
Unfinished Work
There may be times where students do not finish work in class. It will be expected that unfinished work that is due will be completed at home.
* If students do not bring their homework, the expectation is that they finish it and bring it back the following day.
Refocus Recess
Fifth graders are fortunate enough to have a 15 minute recess each morning between our second and third academic blocks. Students can lose this privilege if classwork or homework is incomplete, or if the nightly planner parent signature is missing.
Snack
We allow students to eat a snack during the morning due to our late lunch. Students may bring a small, healthy snack in to eat during the beginning of block #2.
Restroom Policy
In 5th grade, we use hall passes for students to leave the classroom. Students receive two hall passes each day. Any time a student needs to leave the classroom to go into the hallway (restroom, drink, forgot something in backpack or homeroom) they need to use a pass.
Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle (water only please) to limit trips to the drinking fountain. They are also encouraged to use the restroom before school and during non-academic times throughout the day.
Please contact me with any medical conditions that might prevent your student from using this policy.
Thanks,
Eric Hines
